Communication

Communicating (transfer of information) is primary. Communication cannot be over emphasized, especially when offshore, even though a lot of our communications are to an answering machine in the form of a monologue (Remember Johnny Carson?).

As A Guide, Refer To: Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How.

During Mobilization:

Example:

bullet

This is Joe Bigfoot. It's Friday the 13th at 21:00.

bullet

I'm at the M&I Dock in Fourchon and should be leaving onboard the Macalwell 4 point Vessel Footrot in the next 45 minutes.

bullet

My phone number onboard is 318-222-2222. We should arrive in the field at approximately 06:00 tomorrow the 14th. I will call again when we get into the field.

bullet

The first planned task is to install a crossing over Shell's 12" in S. S. 214. Next we will complete the tie-in.

bullet

Follow with any pertinent information that could possibly be of use or provide the engineer with any insight for future reference or just general interest.

Upon Arrival At The Job Site

bullet

Call again with the same information (we're dealing with engineers, etc. and sometimes they forget). Reiterate phone numbers, vessel names, location and tasks. Follow up with progress reports and planned work for the next 24 hours on the forms you are provided with.

bullet

Follow up calls: Reiterate and give progress report and planned works for the next 24 hours. Include any other information that may be important or informative, I.E., equipment breakdowns, safety info., weather, work practices, safety concerns, pollution, etc.

Demobilization: Reiterate Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How.
