Introduction
An effective office safety program and the
prevention of risk factors and unsafe conditions are a crucial part of the
office environment. Employees and
contractors need to consider the hazards present in any job environment and take
a role in prevention of injuries.

trips, and falls on the same level or from elevations

Housekeeping
and Equipment Precautions:
 |
Safely
stack materials / boxes to avoid creating a hazard.
|
 |
File
drawers and desks drawers should not be left open.
Do not overload top drawers. Keep
heavy files in lower drawers.
|
 |
Secure
paper cutter blades in the down position when not in use.
|
 |
Secure
sharp objects in proper containers or with blades and points covered or
shielded.
|
 |
Equipment,
such as chairs should be properly positioned before sitting down; once you
are seated, keep at least one foot and all chair legs on the floor at all
times.

 |
Do
not scoot across the floor while sitting in a chair and do not lean sideways
from a chair to pick up an object.
|
 |
When
materials must be carried, use proper lifting and carrying techniques.
|
 |
Use
only stools or stepladders to reach materials stored above eye level.
Chairs are unacceptable to use as climbing devices.
|
 |
When
moving equipment, furniture, or boxes, use proper carts, dollies, or trucks.
Get help if needed.

Electrical
 |
Use
of extension cords should be minimized and cords should be arranged to avoid
tripping hazards and electrical overload.

 |
Do
not pull an electrical cord out of the power outlet to disconnect or turn
off power.
|
 |
Disconnect
(unplug) the power source before trying to remove jammed materials from a
machine.
|
 |
Only
qualified workers using approved materials shall do installation or repair
of any electrical equipment.
|
 |
Keep
food, drinks, and excessive combustible materials away from electrical
equipment, computers, and workstations.
|
Fire
Precautions
 |
Be
familiar with locations of fire alarms and extinguishers near your
workstation.
|
 |
Become
familiar with emergency procedures and know the appropriate evacuation route
for your workstation.
|
 |
During
evacuations, DO NOT USE ELEVATORS! Use
stairways, follow exit signs, and remove high heel shoes to avoid falling
down stairs.
|
 |
Keep
all passageways, entryways, aisles, storerooms, service rooms, and work
areas clean, orderly, sanitary and well maintained, with no obstructions.
