Descriptions
of Manual Lifting and Handling:
Arms Close to the Body: Keep arms close to the body. The body then takes the weight instead of the hands and arms.
Position Feet: Your leading foot should always point in the direction of travel.
Stance: Face the direction of travel if lifting alone. Stand over the weight. Feet should be positioned about 12 inches apart and one slightly in front of the other. This position enables you to keep your balance.
Straight back: Keeping a straight back does not mean a vertical back. Be aware to the difference. Maintain a straight back; let the leg muscles do the work.
Chin in: Before lifting, raise the head slightly and tuck the chin in. This also helps to keep the back straight.
Unsafe: Top Heavy and Consciously keeping back straight when lowering hands lead to Progressive Stiffening as hands are lowered
Safe: Progressive Relaxation results from Unlocking of Both Knees as hands are lowered. Looking Up as hands take the load Automatically straight back at the Correct Moment. |
